Grade 12 Network Technologies

Computer Applications Technology practice questions and a worked example

Grade 12 CAT network questions test NSC-level networking and cloud concepts -- wireless network trade-offs, NIC function, PAN limitations, cloud storage advantages and internet throttling. Practice questions here are drawn from a real national November NSC paper's Network Technologies section.

Worked example

3.1 A hub allows a computer to send and receive data via a telephone line.

Answer & explanation

False. The correct term is Modem/Router/ADSL — a hub does not allow a computer to send/receive data via a telephone line.
A hub is a networking device used to connect multiple computers within a local network, allowing them to communicate with each other. It does not have the capability to connect a computer to the internet via a telephone line. For internet connectivity through a telephone line, devices such as a modem, router, or ADSL modem are used. These devices convert digital signals from a computer into analog signals that can be transmitted over a telephone line, and vice versa. Therefore, the statement about a hub is false.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing throttling (an ISP deliberately slowing a connection due to a Fair Use Policy) with an unrelated slow-connection cause such as a faulty router. Learners also sometimes describe a PAN (personal area network) using LAN-scale advantages/disadvantages instead of its own short-range limitations.
