Grade 11 Network Technologies

Computer Applications Technology practice questions and a worked example

Grade 11 CAT network questions ask you to define a network, give reasons a business would set one up, name the hardware it needs, and explain how a client computer differs from a server and what an ISP provides. The practice questions here come from a Grade 11 CAT Paper 2 (theory) exemplar, including scenario questions about networking an exhibition venue.

Worked example

9.2.1 Various types of servers and portable computers will be on show. Give TWO advantages of using a proxy server, apart from the general function of any server in a network.

Answer & explanation

Any TWO: allows users to connect to the internet/share a common internet connection; can speed up internet access by storing/caching web pages on disk; a central point of control for implementing anti-malware security measures; can filter/restrict access to specific sites; can be used to log internet usage.
1. A proxy server can speed up internet access by storing or caching web pages on disk. This means that when a user requests a page that has already been cached, it can be delivered faster from the proxy server rather than fetching it again from the internet. 2. It can filter or restrict access to specific sites. This allows network administrators to block access to inappropriate or non-work-related websites, enhancing security and productivity. These advantages are specific to proxy servers and go beyond the general functions of any server in a network.
