Grade 12 Network Technologies (IEB)

Computer Applications Technology practice questions and a worked example

These Grade 12 CAT network questions are from an IEB exam: the difference between broadband and bandwidth, how fibre and ADSL connect to the internet, identifying a network topology and its pros and cons, what a NIC and a switch do, and whether a business in a scenario needs a server. The practice questions here come from the IEB November 2019 CAT Paper I (theory).

Worked example

4.1 Clearly explain the difference between the terms broadband and bandwidth.

Answer & explanation

Broadband: high-speed internet access that is always on and faster than dial-up. Bandwidth: the capacity of a wired or wireless communications link to transmit the maximum amount of data from one point to another in a given time (speed of data transfer).
1. Broadband refers to high-speed internet access that is always on. It is faster than older technologies like dial-up, allowing for quicker data transmission and a more reliable connection. 2. Bandwidth is the measure of the capacity of a communication link to transmit data. It indicates how much data can be sent over a network in a given time period, often measured in bits per second (bps). In summary, broadband is a type of internet connection, while bandwidth refers to the data transfer capacity of any network connection.
