Grade 12 Information Management

Computer Applications Technology practice questions and a worked example

Grade 12 CAT information-management questions follow the steps of the PAT: the difference between data and information, choosing reliable data sources, writing a task definition, planning a questionnaire, and evaluating websites and your own work. The practice questions here come from the November 2023 NSC CAT Paper 2 (theory).

Worked example

4.3.1 Describe what is meant by data and give an example.

Answer & explanation

Data refers to raw facts which, as such, do not have any meaning (unprocessed/not analysed facts). Example: a list of numbers or words.
Data consists of raw, unprocessed facts that by themselves do not have any specific meaning. These facts can be numbers, words, or symbols that have not yet been analyzed or interpreted. For example, a list of numbers like 5, 10, 15, and 20 is considered data because it is simply a collection of values without context or analysis. Once data is processed and given context, it becomes information.
