Grade 11 Domestic, Regional and International Tourism

Tourism practice questions and a worked example

This topic covers two related CAPS themes: South Africa's own Domestic Tourism Growth Strategy (the Sho't Left marketing campaign, its market segments, and its strategic objectives) and regional tourism across the SADC -- member countries, their capital cities, and why growing regional tourism benefits the whole region's economy. Practice questions are built from a real November exam paper, including reading an actual Sho't Left Twitter promotion to identify the market segment it targets and naming SADC countries and capitals off a labelled map.

Worked example

Study the Twitter extract: "This June @citylodgehotels has a special Father's Day treat lined up for all the dads. There is a range of deals and meals to spoil the father figures in your life. Prices range from only R700 per night and R99 per meal. Rate includes VAT and Tourism Levy. Rate is per room. Motivate the above statement by providing THREE reasons. (3 x 2) (6)

Answer

No reason to take a trip. No time to travel. Disliking travel. Unemployment. Lack of a travel culture especially amongst previously disadvantaged communities. Limited tourism product development. Concerns over safety and security.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up the Domestic Tourism Growth Strategy's market segments (e.g. "New Horizon Families") with generic demographic descriptions -- CAPS expects the actual named segment, not just an age or income guess. On SADC map questions, learners often confuse a country's location with a neighbouring country's, especially along shared borders.
