Grade 10 Agro-ecology

Agricultural Sciences practice questions and a worked example

Grade 10 Agricultural Sciences agro-ecology questions cover ecosystems and energy flow, nutrient cycles, pastures and veld management, South African biomes and climate change. You read food chains, an ecological pyramid, the water cycle and tables of pasture data, name processes and trophic levels, and explain grazing systems, stocking rate and how farmers adapt to climate change. They come from Grade 10 November Paper 1s: the Eastern Cape Department of Education’s 2019 paper and 2020 exemplar and North West’s 2024 paper, each with the answer from the marking guideline.

Common mistakes

  • Counting the sun as a trophic level. A chain of grass, grasshopper, mouse and owl has four trophic levels; the sun is the source of energy.
  • Mixing up sour veld and sweet veld. Sour veld is found where rainfall is high (more than 625 mm per year) and is only good in the growing season; sweet veld is good all year round.
  • Naming a grazing system when a measure is asked. The number of animals a farmer allows in a camp is the stocking rate; moving animals from one camp to another is rotational grazing.
