Grade 12 Sectors and careers

Hospitality practice questions and a worked example

Grade 12 Hospitality Studies questions on sectors and careers come from the final NSC exam, many of them based on a small hospitality business. The questions here ask you to name revenue and non-revenue areas and the roles of departments such as finance and human resources, complete parts of a business plan, judge advertisements and marketing tools, and explain how hospitality adds to the economy. They come from the Department of Basic Education’s Grade 12 Hospitality Studies NSC papers for November 2023, November 2024 and November 2025, each with the answer from the marking guideline.

Answer & explanation

C – Pays staff salaries D – Controls banking procedures F – Signs contracts with reliable service providers (Any order)
The Finance and Accounting Department in a large hospitality establishment typically handles financial transactions and management. 1. **C – Pays staff salaries:** This is a direct responsibility of the finance department, ensuring that all employees are compensated correctly and on time. 2. **D – Controls banking procedures:** This involves managing the establishment's bank accounts, transactions, and ensuring that all financial processes are secure and efficient. 3. **F – Signs contracts with reliable service providers:** While this may sometimes involve collaboration with other departments, the finance department often oversees the financial aspects of contracts to ensure they are financially viable and beneficial. Common mistakes

  • Calling the bar or function room a non-revenue area. Non-revenue areas, such as housekeeping, maintenance and security, earn no income directly but add to income through the image they create.
  • Describing an advertisement without judging it. The marking guideline starts with good or bad and then gives points such as the contact details, the special offer or the missing price.
  • Mixing up finance and human resources. Finance pays salaries and controls banking; human resources hires and trains staff and draws up employment contracts.
