Grade 12 Probability

Mathematical Literacy practice questions and a worked example

Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy probability questions from the NSC papers ask you to work out the chance of an event from a table, a graph or a map, and to write it as a fraction, decimal or percentage. Some ask you to check whether someone's claim about a probability is valid. Practise them alongside the data questions they come from.

Worked example

4.2.5 Bonolo stated that the probability of randomly selecting a girl wearing a dress with body size smaller than XXL is 0,833. Verify, with calculations, whether her statement is VALID.

Answer

P = 5/6 = 0,833. Her statement is VALID.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong total as the denominator.
  • Giving the answer in a different form from the one asked for (fraction, decimal or percentage).
  • Not simplifying a fraction when the question asks for its simplest form.
