Grade 12 Data handling

Mathematical Literacy practice questions and a worked example

Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy data handling questions from the NSC papers give you a table, bar graph, line graph or box-and-whisker plot and ask you to read and analyse it. You find the mean, median, mode, range and quartiles, spot outliers and comment on trends or bias in a sample. Practise them to get used to how the exam presents real data.

Worked example

3.1.3 Compare and comment on the urban and rural descriptors of the two age groups using the graph above.

Answer

The percentage of children in the under-5 category is almost the same for urban and rural areas. There is a greater increase from the under-5 to the 5–17 category in urban areas than in rural areas. (OR a comment such as: healthy food vs junk food, more active vs less active, walking to school vs driving to school.)

Common mistakes

  • Finding the median without first arranging the data in order.
  • Reading the wrong data set when a graph shows two groups side by side.
  • Describing a trend without referring to the actual values on the graph.
