Consumer Studies practice questions and a worked example

Grade 12 Consumer Studies questions on housing and interior come from the final NSC exam. The questions here ask you to compare full-title, sectional-title and rental housing, explain documents such as the title deed, lease and offer to purchase, explain the costs of buying, building and renting, and judge whether an appliance such as a fridge or freezer suits a buyer. They come from the Department of Basic Education’s Grade 12 Consumer Studies NSC papers for November 2022, November 2023 and November 2025, each with the answer from the marking guideline.

B You can run a business from home with permission. C Property cannot be security for a loan. D It is cheaper in the long term. E You are not responsible for maintenance. F There are fewer monthly expenses.

Answer & explanation

B – You can run a business from home with permission. E – You are not responsible for maintenance. F – There are fewer monthly expenses. (Any order)
When renting a home, there are several advantages: 1. **Option B**: You may be able to run a business from home with the landlord's permission, offering flexibility in how you use the space. 2. **Option E**: As a tenant, you are not responsible for maintenance. This responsibility typically falls on the landlord, saving you time and money. 3. **Option F**: Renting often involves fewer monthly expenses compared to owning a home, as you do not have to pay for property taxes or major repairs. These options highlight the benefits of renting, such as reduced financial responsibilities and flexibility.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up a levy and rates. Owners in a sectional-title complex pay a levy to the body corporate; rates go to the municipality.
  • Confusing lay-by with an instalment sale. With lay-by the appliance stays with the seller until it is fully paid; an instalment sale charges interest.
  • Answering only one side of a “compare” question set out as a table. In the marking guideline each column carries its own marks.
