The questions here ask you to read the fashion cycle, explain fashion terms such as classic, fad and retrospective fashion, explain what makes fashion change, choose versatile clothes for the world of work from pictures, and discuss brand piracy and the environmental cost of fast fashion. They come from the Department of Basic Education’s Grade 12 Consumer Studies NSC papers for November 2022, November 2023 and November 2025, each with the answer from the marking guideline.

Worked example

SECTION B: LONG QUESTIONS QUESTION 4: CLOTHING 4.1 Define the term brand piracy.

Answer & explanation

Brand piracy occurs when a product is given a name that is similar to that of a well-known brand deliberately so that consumers may mistake it for the actual brand name. OR Brand piracy is the imitation/ a fake of the original, but they do not look exactly like the original. OR Brand piracy is the unauthorised usage of protected brand/ trade names/ trademarks/ logos/ imitation of labels/ packaging/ presentation of products.
Brand piracy involves creating products that imitate or use elements of well-known brands without permission. This can include using similar names, logos, or packaging to deceive consumers into thinking they are buying the original brand. The goal is often to capitalize on the reputation and recognition of the established brand, leading to consumer confusion and unfair competition.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking vertical stripes make a person look broader. In the papers, vertical lines create length and make the wearer look narrower and taller.
  • Describing a fad only as “new”. The marking guideline contrasts a fad’s high demand for a short time with a classic that stays in fashion for many seasons.
  • Mixing up brand piracy and grey goods. Brand piracy imitates a well-known brand; grey goods are imported through unofficial channels.
