Grade 10 Data Handling
Maths practice questions and a worked example
Grade 10 data-handling questions give you a set of data, such as learners' heights or the ages of people taking out a mortgage, and ask you to work out the mean, median, mode, range and quartiles, and to show the data in a stem and leaf diagram, a histogram, a frequency polygon or a box and whisker diagram. The practice questions here come from Grade 10 Paper 2 November exams (Gauteng 2022 and KwaZulu-Natal 2023).
Worked example
1.1 The heights of 18 grade 8 learners were recorded in cm as shown below: 147, 131, 142, 133, 152, 125, 128, 162, 129, 165, 151, 130, 143, 162, 110, 129, 139, 153. Represent the data on a stem and leaf diagram.
Answer & explanation
Stem (tens digit) | Leaf (units digit): 11|0; 12|5 8 9 9; 13|0 1 3 9; 14|2 3 7; 15|1 2 3; 16|2 2 (sorted data: 110,125,128,129,129,130,131,133,139,142,143,147,151,152,153,162,162,165)
1. Sort the data in ascending order: 110, 125, 128, 129, 129, 130, 131, 133, 139, 142, 143, 147, 151, 152, 153, 162, 162, 165.
2. Identify the tens digit as the stem and the units digit as the leaf.
3. For the 110, the stem is 11 and the leaf is 0.
4. For the numbers in the 120s, the stem is 12 and the leaves are 5, 8, 9, 9.
5. Continue this process for each group: 13|0 1 3 9; 14|2 3 7; 15|1 2 3; 16|2 2.
6. The stem and leaf diagram is complete, showing the data distribution clearly.
