Grade 10 Plant Tissues
Life Sciences practice questions and a worked example
Grade 10 Plant Tissues is part of the CAPS Life Sciences curriculum, covering the different tissue types found in plants — meristematic tissue, parenchyma, sclerenchyma and collenchyma, and the vascular tissues xylem and phloem — and how each tissue's structure suits its function. Learners work through questions that identify these tissues from diagrams of plant organs and vascular bundles.
The practice questions below are drawn from ReClass's own question bank, based on real Grade 10 CAPS assessments, giving learners a chance to work through plant tissue questions in the same style they will meet in a test.
Worked example
2.1 The diagrams below show animal and plant tissues.
2.1.4 Explain TWO ways in which tissue X is structurally suited to perform its function.
Answer
The cells are elongated, where the cross walls disappear to form continuous tubes for the transport of water. Xylem tissue does not contain cytoplasm, so the path of water is not blocked. The cellulose cell walls are strengthened with lignin to prevent them from collapsing under the strong suction pressure. (Any TWO)

- 22.4.2 Provide the LETTER for the part: (a) Structurally adapted to increase the surface area (b) Serving as packaging tissue (c) Transporting water and minerals (d) Responsible for secondary growth
- 31.1.9 Which of the following consist of sclerenchyma cap, phloem, cambium, and xylem?
- 41.1.10 Which of the following parts form part of phloem tissue?
- 51.2.8 Give the correct biological term for conducting tissue that transport manufactured food from the leaves to all parts of the plant.
Common mistakes
- Confusing xylem (transports water and minerals upward) with phloem (transports manufactured food in both directions).
- Not recognising that meristematic tissue is found at growing points (root and shoot tips), not throughout the plant.
- Mixing up sclerenchyma and collenchyma as sources of mechanical support in a plant.
