Grade 10 Cell Division: Mitosis

Life Sciences practice questions and a worked example

Grade 10 Cell Division: Mitosis is part of the CAPS Life Sciences curriculum, covering the phases of mitosis — prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase — and its biological importance in growth, repair and asexual reproduction. Learners also work with diagrams of dividing cells, identifying the stage shown and explaining what happens to the chromosomes at each phase, as well as what happens when cell division becomes uncontrolled. The practice questions below are drawn from ReClass's own question bank, based on real Grade 10 CAPS assessments, giving learners a chance to work through mitosis questions in the same style they will meet in a test.

Worked example

1.4.1 Identify the above cells as belonging to an animal or plant AND provide a VISUAL reason for the answer.

Answer

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up metaphase (chromosomes align at the equator) and anaphase (chromatids are pulled to opposite poles).
  • Forgetting that the number of chromosomes stays the same after mitosis — each daughter cell gets a full, identical set.
  • Not being able to link uncontrolled mitosis to the formation of a tumour/cancer.
