Grade 10 Systems Technologies: Software

Computer Applications Technology practice questions and a worked example

Grade 10 CAT software questions check whether you can tell system software from application software and explain everyday software behaviour -- what a plug-in does, why a program needs updating, or what a menu shortcut is for. Practice questions here work from real past-paper scenarios, including short 'explain what happened and why' items based on a described computer problem.

Worked example

4.1 Your sister was using Facebook when a message popped up saying that she must install a ‘plug-in’ to view the page. Explain what a plug-in is and what it generally allows one to do.

Answer & explanation

A plug-in is a program / software. It allows one to view ‘special’/multimedia effects.
A plug-in is a software component that adds specific capabilities to a larger software application. In this case, it is a small program that integrates with a web browser to enable it to display content that it cannot handle on its own, such as videos, animations, or interactive features. When your sister received a message to install a plug-in, it was likely because the web page contained multimedia content that her browser needed additional software to display properly.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up system software (the operating system and its utilities) with application software (the programs a user opens to do a task) -- a driver or an antivirus program is system software even though the user interacts with it. Learners also confuse open-source software with freeware; open-source specifically means the source code is available to change.
