English practice questions and a worked example

Grade 9 English Language Structure and Use covers the grammar and vocabulary tested in the language section of Paper 2. The questions here ask you to correct the mistake in a sentence, rewrite sentences in reported speech, the passive voice, the negative form or another tense, punctuate a sentence, join two sentences and choose the correct form of a verb. At word level you identify parts of speech such as adverbs, adjectives, gerunds and abstract nouns, give synonyms, add prefixes and suffixes, and fill in prepositions and pronouns. The questions come from the Eastern Cape Department of Education's Grade 9 English First Additional Language Paper 2 for November 2017, 2018 and 2019, each with the memorandum's answer.

Moving Memoirs. You Magazine, 18 May 2017] Refer to TEXT D above and answer the questions that follow. 4.3 Join the following sentences into ONE sentence: This book will help you develop your confidence. This book will teach you how to breathe.

Answer & explanation

This book will help you develop your confidence and it will teach you how to breathe.
1. Identify the main ideas in both sentences: the book helps develop confidence and teaches how to breathe. 2. Combine the sentences using a conjunction. Here, 'and' is suitable because both actions are equally important. 3. The correct combined sentence is: "This book will help you develop your confidence and teach you how to breathe." This maintains the original meaning and combines the sentences smoothly.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out the doer in the passive voice. “The learners used computer games” becomes “Computer games were used by the learners”.
  • Repeating the subject when joining two sentences. Use a pronoun in the second half: “This book will help you develop your confidence and it will teach you how to breathe.”
