Grade 10 Maps and Plans

Mathematical Literacy practice questions and a worked example

Grade 10 Mathematical Literacy maps and plans questions give you a floor plan, a hostel layout, a road map, a map of South Africa and a step-by-step diagram. You count windows and beds, give directions and compass directions, explain a scale such as 1 : 150, and use a scale to find a real area or a length on the plan. They come from Grade 10 November papers set by the Eastern Cape (2019, and the 2020 exemplar) and North West (2024) education departments, each with the answer from the marking guideline.

Worked example

Refer to the map of South Africa below and answer the following questions. 4.1 What type of the scale is given in the diagram and interpret the given scale?

Common mistakes

  • Using the scale the wrong way. On a 1 : 150 layout the drawn width is the real width divided by 150: 3,6 m ÷ 150 = 0,024 m, which is 24 mm.
  • Skipping the unit conversion after the scale. A plan width of 4,8 cm at 1 : 50 is 240 cm, which must become 2,4 m before you work out the area in m².
  • Giving every room the same number of beds. In the hostel, room 07 has 4 beds, so one block holds (6 × 3) + 4 = 22 learners.
