My Child Studies but Still Gets Low Marks: What Could Be Missing?

By The ReClass Team · 30 September 2026

It is frustrating for a parent, and for a learner, when real effort doesn't show in the marks. Your child spends time studying, and the results stay the same. That usually doesn't mean the effort is wasted. It can mean the time is going into the wrong kind of work, or into topics that aren't the ones costing marks.

This guide looks at what could be missing, and how to find out which applies to your child.

Studying more isn't always the answer

More hours of the same kind of studying often give the same result. Before asking for more time, look at what that time is spent on. Some possibilities are below. Not every one will apply, and your child's teacher may see others.

They may be practising the wrong things

It's natural to revise the topics that feel comfortable, because it feels productive. But time on topics that are already solid doesn't help with the ones costing marks. Compare what your child is studying with where marks were lost in the last test. If the two don't match, that's worth changing first.

They may recognise a method without being able to use it

Reading notes or a worked example can make a method feel familiar. Using it on a new question, without the example in front of you, is a different skill. A learner can recognise every step and still not know how to start a question on their own.

One way to check: ask your child to try a question without their notes, and to explain each step as they go.

Earlier gaps can affect later topics

Many subjects build on earlier work. A learner who is unsure about working with negative numbers may find equations harder, even when they study the equations carefully. If new topics keep going wrong, it may be worth looking back at the earlier idea they depend on.

Look at the work, not only the mark

The mark tells you how much went wrong. The marked work tells you what. Look at which questions lost marks, whether they share a topic, and what kind of mistake each one was. Our guide on how to identify learning gaps covers how to tell a one-off slip from a pattern.

How targeted practice can help

Once you know which topics are costing marks, practice can focus there:

  • questions on that topic, not only re-reading notes;
  • questions tried without looking at a worked example first;
  • a check on the same topic later, to see whether it holds.

When additional support is needed

If focused practice isn't making a difference, or you can't tell what is going wrong, talk to your child's teacher. A tutor can also watch your child work through questions and see where they get stuck. If you are worried about something beyond schoolwork, the school is the right first conversation.

How ReClass supports this process

ReClass Learning Assist helps point the effort at the right topics:

  • A short Learning Check, where one is available for your child's grade and subject, shows how each topic is going.
  • The Learning Passport keeps a topic-by-topic record of progress from Learning Checks, practice and Homework Assist, and highlights the topic that currently needs the most attention.
  • Topic practice, where it is available, gives questions on one topic, and a short re-check can show whether it is moving.
  • Homework Assist works through a question step by step, with hints one at a time, so your child uses the method rather than reading an answer.

It shows where practice may be most useful. It can't guarantee better marks, and it only knows about the work done on ReClass.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child study hard but still get low marks?

There isn’t one answer. Possibilities include time going into topics that are already solid, recognising a method without being able to use it on a new question, or an earlier topic that later work depends on. Where marks were lost is the best place to start.

Should my child study for longer?

Not necessarily. More time on the same kind of studying often gives the same result. It is usually more useful to change what the time is spent on first.

Can ReClass guarantee better marks?

No. ReClass shows which topics may need more practice and gives ways to practise them, but results depend on many things, including the work done at school.
